It is common for large "loading doses" of the medication to be given at the start of treatment in severe infections; these doses are typically twice the amount of the "maintenance dose" taken throughout the rest of treatment. Do not exceed 4000 mg in a 24 hour period.

To keep levels of the drug consistent in the body, it's beneficial to take doses spread as evenly apart as possible and at the same times each day. It's also important to complete the full course of treatment even if symptoms disappear.

Food is optional when taking metronidazole, though taking it with a meal might help if stomach upset occurs.
